For many people, a balcony is a place to store things that are sure to come in handy sometime or there simply wasn’t room for them in small rooms. Oh, the balcony space can be equipped with convenience, there are many options and ideas.

What can you turn a regular balcony into?

1. Guest room or dining room. You can put a table, chairs or a sofa or couch - it all depends on the size of the balcony. A wonderful decoration will be flowers and other decorative elements. And then here you can safely drink tea with friends and chat, enjoying the views from the window. Or eat the whole family "outdoors."
2. Winter Garden. This, in general, is the most magnificent use of a balcony. Imagine that in any weather you can go out to your balcony and enjoy the beautiful plants. You can put a sofa or chair in the corner and feel exactly in an oasis.
3. Personal Area. Also a good option, especially if the apartment does not have a separate room for this purpose. Or if children are noisy and running around in the rooms, then you can retire and do a little work in your personal account on the balcony.
4. Workshop. For creative people, in principle, inspiration is always necessary, and where but on the balcony there is plenty of it, especially if there are appropriate views outside the window.
5. Greenhouse. A very pleasant and useful use of the balcony space. While other people are forced to go to the market for vegetables, in summer and winter you can only go out to your balcony and harvest. Of course, this requires adequate heating and lighting, but it's worth it.
6. Gaming. If quadrature allows, then you can make a children's playground with horizontal bars, slides, swings, sandbox and so on. Of course, it is better for children to play with peers on the street, but in bad weather you won’t go out on the street, but you always want to play. In the summer, by the way, you can fill the pool for children on the same balcony and invite friends to visit.
7. The gym. For this, one or two exercise machines, some dumbbells and similar equipment are enough, we add a player here and you can safely do sports, exercise or gymnastics in the fresh air, without disturbing anyone.
8. Sauna. Some people will convert their balconies to saunas. This is a rather bold decision, requiring the hands of professionals and considerable space. As well as all necessary safety measures.

How to equip a balcony ...

The most correct is to equip the balcony in a single composition with the interior design of the apartment. Designers prefer to make balconies and loggias, as a natural continuation of the entire interior.

So, the first thing that catches your eye when we go to the balcony is its fence. You can begin the restoration of this space with this particular part. And here we have several options for finishing the fence. The choice depends on whether the owner wants to shield himself or leave the panorama overview open. The choice is also influenced by climatic conditions and geographical location.

1. Deaf fence. This option is chosen by those who want to hide from prying eyes, and through the windows to admire the views. It is also a good shelter from bad weather and city noise. In this case, you can choose the lining of the lower part of the fence under a natural stone. Brickwork also looks good. But do not forget that balconies and loggias are not designed for heavy loads, so experts advise you to choose lightweight materials that will simulate stone cladding. The upper part traditionally has windows.

2. Half-deaf fence. Here, the lower part of the fence is closed from prying eyes, and the upper remains completely free to enjoy the open spaces.

3. Glass railing. This is suitable for people who are either not afraid that they will be seen by neighbors and passers-by, or simply there are none. But there is a need to hide from rain or snow. Glass cloth can occupy only the lower part of the fence or the lower and upper.

4. Fencing space. Here, it is understood that the fence simply outlines the boundaries of space, and, of course, does not allow it to fall from a balcony or a loggia. In such cases, metal grilles or forged fences are used.

The next step will be the decoration of the walls, floor and ceiling. Naturally, they should be designed in the same style with the fence. The most versatile is the imitation of stone cladding, it will fit any type of fence. But here the correct selection of color and texture of false materials is important. Of course, lining, and decorative panels, and laminate, and parquet will do. You can even simply plaster or paint. The main thing is that it fits the purpose of the balcony, that is, what it will be: a winter garden, a gym, a workshop, a greenhouse and so on. The thing is that if you decide to make a greenhouse out of the balcony, then expensive finishing materials here will simply be inappropriate, even if you have the means. The design for the greenhouse, workshop, for example, should be modest and tasteful (brickwork, plaster, just paint, on the floor board and so on). Similarly, a simple finish is not suitable for a mini-sauna, greenhouse. Trust your feelings, they will tell you the right choice, and also seek advice from experienced designers.

It is especially worth considering the decoration of the floors of open balconies and loggias, as they will be exposed to atmospheric precipitation. For this purpose, you can choose the classic landscape materials that are used to cover terraces or walkways. These include: decking, ceramic tiles, mosaic coating, artificial grass. The lawn on the balcony, in general, looks very elegant. You can also build separate sand or gravel areas.

Furniture for a balcony and a loggia

The choice of furniture for a balcony will primarily depend on whether it is open or closed. So, for a closed balcony, you can choose absolutely any furniture that you find more convenient and suitable. The main requirement for her is not too much weight. Well, and accordingly, if the quadrature allows you not to worry about the size of the furniture, if it does not allow it, get a special compact one.

But pick up furniture for open loggias, like a floor covering, from materials that are resistant to precipitation and temperature extremes, that is, landscape products. It is plastic furniture and modern wicker.

What kind of furniture you need depends on your idea of ​​comfort. For some, the most important will be a sofa or sunbed, for others, a table and chairs (armchairs). Still others consider grilling to be the most important. Others hang more lockers for different equipment and so on. It is very convenient to use functional furniture, for example, a sofa with a drawer, a bench with a convertible top and other devices for storing various things. Then the interior will look more spacious and ergonomic.

It is no wonder that there are balconies, where, in general, there is nothing, not a single chair or table. Each owner has his own balcony. But most often it is simply a continuation of the room (bedroom, living room). That is, you can sit or lie comfortably in the room, and the lack of furniture - or, in general, anything - on the balcony allows you to freely enjoy the panorama without getting up, for example, from the sofa.

Plants on the balcony

No matter what the purpose of your balcony, green plants will always be its decoration, of course, if you have the desire. First of all, determine how much space you want to allocate for the flowers. Based on this, you can determine the number and size of plants. Real growth conditions also play a very important role, namely the side of the world, the degree of illumination, the prevailing wind direction. These factors will directly affect the choice of plant species that will be comfortable here.

For balconies with a more modest size, or if you just can’t allocate enough space for the plants, but still want to have them, you can resort to hanging pots, which can be placed on the walls or on the railing on both sides of the balcony railing. On the walls, climbing plants will look best, and on the railing of the fence small or even decorative.

Decor of a balcony or loggia

This space is also characterized by the presence of decors and accessories. These seemingly inconspicuous details emphasize any interior and make the design more complete and sophisticated. For balconies, anything that suits your taste may be suitable as a decoration, it is good if this is combined with the general orientation of the entire apartment. Metal, plastic, ceramic accessories and stone products will perfectly cope with weather changes. A great choice for a balcony is wind chimes or bird feeders.

More and more often lately, loggias have been decorated with artificial ponds, waterfalls, fountains. In the heat, the water will refresh you, and the murmur will soothe.

Equipping a balcony or a loggia, the most important thing is that you do not treat this room as a separate space. It should be one with the whole apartment. Consider additional lighting here if you like to relax on the balcony in the evening. You can separately equip a table with light, create a backlight for plants and then your quiet and secluded corner in the fresh air will be cozy and comfortable.
